چکیده

Vanadate (Na(3) VO(4)) inhibits leaf movement and stomatal conductance of Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Carlos Favorit in light-dark cycles as well as photomorphogenetic leaf unrolling of Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Rupal. Inhibition was 50% by 10 to 100 micromolar vanadate and 100% by millimolar vanadate. Leaf unrolling was also inhibited by oligomycin and diethylstilbestrol.Millimolar vanadate is required to affect respiration of bean plants and barley leaves, while even this concentration has no effect on respiration of isolated pulvinal tissue.A nonspecific phosphatase activity extracted from both bean pulvini and barley leaves was found in all of four fractions of a differential centrifugation procedure (i.e. cell walls + nuclei, mitochondria, microsomes, super-natant), but more than 90% of the specific and total activity was located in the supernatant. The phosphatase activities of all fractions were inhibited by concentrations of vanadate similar to those which inhibited leaf movement, stomatal conductance of bean, and unrolling of barley leaves.

Dust Particles and Aerosols: Impact on Biota “A Review” (Part I)

The impacts of Dust and Sand Storms (DSS) on people, crops, livestock, infrastructure and health are well documented. Data have accumulated on the deleterious effects of dust aerosols when they settle on plants. Sand blasting of low growing plants is a common cause of failure in reforestation efforts. Burial of plants by moving sands are also a cause of much damage. The physics of moving sand a...

Effect of grafting on eggplant leaf gas exchanges under mediterranean greenhouse conditions

Grafting is an easier and faster approach than plant breeding to take advantage of both existing resistant plants, especially wild cultivars, and high-bred cultivars. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in leaf photosynthetic capacity of a hybrid eggplant Solanum melongena L., cv. Rima (R), widely used in Greece] when grafted on tomato rootstocks known for their resistance to n...

The effect of spraying of methyl jasmonate and 24-epi-brassinolide on photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence and leaf stomatal traits in black mustard (Brassica nigra L.) under salinity stress

Methyl jasmonate and Epi-brassinolide as plant growth regulators have significant biological effects on plant growth, including increased tolerance to salt stress in plants. In this study, the effects of salinity stress and its interaction with methyl jasmonate and Epi-brassinolide on chlorophyll concentration, rate of photosynthesis, transpiration, stomatal conductance and resistance and chlor...

Diurnal Variations of Gas Exchange Characteristics in Leaves of Anise Hyssop (Agastache foeniculum) under Normal, Drought Stress and Recovery Conditions

Net photosynthesis rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration rate (E) of anise hyssop were measured during the four cloudless days, in reference to diurnal fluctuations of leaf temperature (Tleaf), leaf vapor pressure deficit (VPD leaf) and photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) in well watered (WW), stressed (S) and recovered (R) plants. An analysis of measured data showed tha...
